The Coordinating Committee, acting on behalf of the Region, considered the geological names of Cambrian and Agassiz to be appropriate, since our region sits on these ancient formations.
The Cambrian Shield, extending from the Great Lakes to Arctic Ocean, took its name from Cambria, the name given to Wales by the invading Romans. When 500 million year old rocks were discovered there, they were named Cambrian. All future discoveries of rock of that age became known as Cambrian.
11,500 years ago the glacial Lake Agassiz was formed from the melting continental ice sheet. The lake covered much of Manitoba and Northwest Ontario and was named after Louis Aggasiz, the Swiss-born geologist, known as the "Father of Glaciation." Remnants of Lake Agassiz include Lake Winnipeg, Lake Manitoba and Lake of the Woods. The Red River Valley was the bed of Lake Agassiz.
So we are now CAMBRIAN-AGASSIZ REGION. May we be as firm as this Central Canada Rock, in our resolve to melt glacial hearts so that justice will indeed roll like a mighty river.
